The Peripheral @ NSARadio.com asked:

I host a show called The Peripheral for NSARadio.com and we are currently doing an episode exploring the American Corrections/Prison System. Prison inmates are used as an inexpensive form of labor (45 cents per hour in some cases) and we were wondering what you think of this. We would like some feedback on the issue from as many sources as possible. Please be articulate and use full sentences and we may use your quote on the show.

It would also be helpful if you would tell us if you have ever been arrested or have any knowledge of through family/friends of jail and prison conditions.
It does seem that one of the main issues that people are concerned with are taxes. Keep in mind that 1/3 of the prisons in the US are owned by private corporations and actually turn a profit. The govt. still pays a subsidy to the operation, somewhere between 25% and 35%, even though the prisons make around $60 and $120 million dollars annually.

G asked:

I’m curious about rape in prisons since it is one of the most serious possible crimes, and is probably worse than most of the crimes for which the inmates are in prison in the first place. Sometimes MUCH worse.

So, is it as ubiquitous as it seems in the media? And do inmates get prosecuted, or do authorities look the other way completely?

Thanks.

zpoetress asked:

I write poetry and would like to sell my poetry books to inmates in prisons around the world. What is the process of selling to inmates?
First of all they can buy books and they do have money in jail. If you don’t know then don’t respond.
